Unelected European Union bureaucrats are tightening their grip on American technology platforms, ordering ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox to comply with the bloc’s sweeping online speech regulations or risk crippling financial penalties.
The European Commission has officially designated ChatGPT as a “Very Large Online Search Engine” (VLOSE) under the EU’s controversial Digital Services Act (DSA).
Reddit and Roblox have meanwhile been classified as “Very Large Online Platforms” (VLOPs).
The designations place all three American services under the DSA’s most stringent regulatory regime.
The companies now have until January 2027 to comply with additional requirements governing how they assess, monitor, and mitigate what EU regulators classify as “systemic risks.”
Those requirements extend beyond material that is actually illegal.
Under the DSA, regulators can also scrutinize lawful information they determine contributes to broader “systemic risks,” including content deemed “misleading,” “deceptive,” or “disinformation.”
That sweeping authority has fueled warnings that Brussels has created a censorship mechanism capable of pressuring American companies to suppress perfectly legal speech.
